This Day, I Rode

leave a comment »

This day, I slowly rode my bike to work,
Gliding across the gentle road,
Like a surfer on that glassy face,
Free from the weight of a crushing world,
This Day, the secret is mine, I know myself.

~~
This morning I felt the soft rays of the late winter sun and thought back to my playful and sun-filled days as a child in San Diego. My heart was warm.

I heard the morning songs of unseen birds.  I remembered that the world wants nothing more from me than it wants from the birds.  Just be and sing your song.  My purpose was clear.

I said hello to a dozen people and stopped to visit an old golden retriever who was laying in the morning frost. I was deeply connected.

I smiled the whole way, and I arrived to work as the happiest SOB in the building, maybe even in the entire city….

This is why I ride!

Just a reminder of where we’ve been.  It’s been a great first winter, much love to the SL, UT.

On the Status of Things

leave a comment »

I don’t usually take time away to write about what’s going on in my life with cycling.  I guess that’s mostly because I can barely keep up with it all, let alone sit down and write thoughtfully about it.  With that said, I figured it was time to sum up somethings, so at least I can look back and know what I was doing and when.

So lets start with Advocacy.  Right now I’m working to support several things at the University of Utah.  I’m working on the Climate Action Plan Transportation Team, the Bicycle Master Plan, helping out the Bicycle Collective (ubike.org), and tonight I’m going to attend my first meeting with the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Committee.  I’m also working with some great folks in the University adminstration to start forming the framework for putting together a larger program to improve bicycle planning and promotion on campus.

On the Academic front almost everything is set for entering the Masters program in City & Metropolitan Planning in Fall 2010.  Just need to submit my personal statement, which I plan to do after this weekend of training in St. George.  I’m going to focus on transportation planning, especially on bicycle planning.  I’ve been reading some great academic texts, that I’ll share later.

In the area that matters most, actually cycling, I’m pretty excited for 2010.  I’ll be racing with the University cycling team (unofficially until may, when I’m an actual student) and also riding with the crew from my local shop.  I’ve got some great rides and races planned for the year, with the hope of getting into the LOTOJA at the end of the season.  I’ll take time to post reviews of the rides/races when I can.  I’m pretty excited to check out the San Diego Gran Fondo , 100 mile of course, in March.  It should be a relaxed century to kick of the season right.

I hope to make some tech/gear upgrades later this year when I’m not so broke.  Until then, it’s just working with what I’ve got.  I’m training on the weekends and almost every night after work until it’s too dark and too cold to be reasonable.  I can’t say how much I’m looking forward to longer days, even more so than warmer weather.

My special lady friend a.k.a. fiancée has been awesome and so supportive, and it has really helped out.  It’s sweet to have so many people in my life who are supportive and encouraging about my new found passion for cycling.  Also, I’m way stoked that many of my friends (especially CK1) back home in San Diego, have not only taken up cycling, but are sticking with it and loving it too.

Work is work, but I’m riding in every day… there’s a few more things, but WordPress is being wack, so… end.

Salty Dog has a New Crew

leave a comment »

As I start hitting the trainer in the gym (along with taking advantage of the remaining great fall weather here in Salt Lake) I’ve started thinking about the 2010 riding season.  I’m pretty excited about it as I’ll be riding with a new crew that’s just starting out in SLC.

We’ll be riding for a new local shop called Lake Town Bicycles.  I’m not sure of our event schedule, but I know that the LOTOJA is a must.  It’s way cool to be part of something from the start.  I’ll be sure to share my experiences, both good and bad here.

Below is a template for our first jersey done by Aubrey @ aubreyjoy.com.  More to come…

In support of its new racing team leader Lance Armstrong, RadioShack will be selling Lance’s new photo journal Comeback 2.0  I got the announcement from Facebook…

Lance Armstrong The Comeback 2.0 photo book that Liz Kreutz and I did is available from RadioShack too. It’s a special edition – $10 for each book sold goes to LIVESTRONG. http://bit.ly/o4Y9P

I don’t plan to buy it, but if I get ahold of a copy I’ll review it here.  I’m sure there are some rare and beautiful cycling photos that give an inside view into Lance’s training and life on the bike.

Salty Dog: out of the office

I couldn’t be more stoked!  In just over an hour my long weekend off begins.  I’ll be hanging with my best bike bud from San Diego and cycling all over the SLC valley and canyons.

Needless to say, I’ll not be posting for a few days.  But, when I get back I’ll post some epic pics and hopefully some wild stories.

Here’s a pic of us out riding in SD during the Obama campaign…
